Preschool, Kindergarten, and Grades 1-5 make up Tidewater Academy’s Lower School. Within this special community, teachers, students, and parents work closely together to lay the foundations required for a lifetime of learning. It’s a respectful, supportive environment that encourages children to embrace the challenge and the joy of learning, to develop and practice new skills, to be creative, and to apply the knowledge they have gained in the classroom.
The core subjects of reading, science, social studies, spelling, grammar, and writing are emphasized in the Lower School grades. Each grade level is taught in a self-contained classroom. Throughout each week, students also attend resource classes such as library, music, computer, physical education, and art. Field trips, musical and dramatic productions, guest speakers, and special assemblies extend education beyond the classroom.
Tidewater Academy’s Lower School is a dynamic community in and out of the classroom. Throughout the year, students enjoy participating in all types of programs and events. Kindergarteners look forward to inviting their mothers to the annual Mother’s Day Brunch; The Battle of the Books is an exciting competition for students; AVA Field Day is held each spring at various schools and students are able to exhibit their athletic skills; The Grandparent’s Day Program, various dramatic and musical productions, and art shows throughout the year enable students to show off their artistic talents.
